Poon Choi

Last friday my ‘makan’ gang went for our favorite ‘poon choi’ again. Actually we don’t go very often but often enough… The restaurant is in Sg Buloh but it’s yummy enough for us who live in PJ and Kl to travel all the way there! My dad was the one to introduce this to me and I brought my ‘makan’ gang there and we have been fans ever since. We just love our food and our meats…specially our pork dishes!

Traditionally the ‘poon choi’ is served in the villages in China during weddings and Chinese New Year (i think) It’s so big that it’s enough for 10-13 people… in fact, you won’t want to go if you have less then 10 people as it’s just too much food and it just becomes too ‘jelak’. And the way to eat this dish is to eat from the top and work your way to the bottom. There are many version to this ‘poon choi’ actually. Some even comes with abalone or shark’s fin (that’s the rich man’s version) but I ensure you, is not the traditional kind. This one that we like has 2 ‘layers’. The top layer has roast chicken and duck, fish, prawns, broccoli and cauliflower. The 2nd layer…is all the stewed stuff… like pork knuckles, chicken feet, sea cucumber, bean curd…pork, pork, pork and..did I mention pork? :-D I told you we love pork!! ;-)

This is the part 2 of the earlier post. On the second day… upon my request we went to Food Republic again, this time on Orchard Rd in Wisma Atria. This is where I discovered more yummy food… This is my favorite (ate it for two days in a row! ;-) )

Dan Xiao Mien

My brother told me that it’s a China thing.. There’s many different varieties to it… with pork ribs, beef/tripe/balls, chicken feet etc. On top of that you have either choose to have it in soup or dry. This one that I had for dinner is with beef and soup. Yummy! This is how the noodle is made (kinda like pan mee here in KL) Watch It here. Dan Xiao Mien

Other things that we ate were this Mee Pok. Seems to be my brother and his girlfriend Pei Li’s favorite. They ate this for 2 days in a row.. hehehe!

Mee Pok

Mee Pok is actually the name of the noodle. You can choose what you want to add to it and it’s seasoned with some onion and garlic oil, chili sauce, soy sauce, tomato sauce, dark soy sauce and pepper. Also very Yummy!

Other things that we ate were

Chicken Wings

and this tau foo thing (i’m not very sure what it’s called) My brother seems to like it.

I never use to enjoy the food in Singapore.. Infact, good food never use to be one of Singapore’s main attractions. But this time round I must say that I’ve ate more then I should. Usually food courts will be the last place I would think that I’ll find decent food, but in Singapore it’s food court paradise. It’s where you can get all the yummy food in one place! That’s sinful!! ;-) We actually ate two days in a row in Food Republic. This food court is very different, with it’s elaborate decor and ambience and extensive choice of hawker fare and some stand alone push carts. It’s something not to be missed.  One the first day we went to the one in Suntec City Mall. I was just spoiled for choice but in the end this is what we ordered..

Beef Noodle

This was so-so… Not something that I’ll order again.

Hong Kong Noodles with Roasted Pork

This is actually wanton noodles. The roasted pork was good and the noodles was had a bite to it.

Fried Prawn Hokkien Noodle

My Mom’s favorite. What we call Hokkien Mee here is black but the Singaporean version is this. But it’s really yummy. It’s served with sambal belacan and some lime on the side.

We actually had other stuff but :-D We were so busy stuffing our mouths we forgot to take photos… Hehehe!

Enjoying our food!
