Last friday my ‘makan’ gang went for our favorite ‘poon choi’ again. Actually we don’t go very often but often enough… The restaurant is in Sg Buloh but it’s yummy enough for us who live in PJ and Kl to travel all the way there! My dad was the one to introduce this to me and I brought my ‘makan’ gang there and we have been fans ever since. We just love our food and our meats…specially our pork dishes!
Traditionally the ‘poon choi’ is served in the villages in China during weddings and Chinese New Year (i think) It’s so big that it’s enough for 10-13 people… in fact, you won’t want to go if you have less then 10 people as it’s just too much food and it just becomes too ‘jelak’. And the way to eat this dish is to eat from the top and work your way to the bottom. There are many version to this ‘poon choi’ actually. Some even comes with abalone or shark’s fin (that’s the rich man’s version) but I ensure you, is not the traditional kind. This one that we like has 2 ‘layers’. The top layer has roast chicken and duck, fish, prawns, broccoli and cauliflower. The 2nd layer…is all the stewed stuff… like pork knuckles, chicken feet, sea cucumber, bean curd…pork, pork, pork and..did I mention pork?
I told you we love pork!!
